If television came of age during the Kennedy assassination coverage, it was a rocky transition. Television and radio, each with its own benefits and drawbacks, each covered the tragedy in its own way. Technical difficulties and human sorrow led to a sense of chaos in the aftermath. Prominent news anchors like Walter Cronkite made household names of themselves, and the world watched as Jackie Kennedy contributed the “human factor” to the coverage. Learn more about media coverage of the JFK assassination in this article, made available by The World & I Online.

Myths of the JFK Assassination Coverage eBook Chris Chandler

I enjoyed this article. A fresh breakaway from the endless and tired experts explaining who did it, how many shots were fired, Grassy Knoll, etc. I do concur that radio coverage was more stable in that first hour of shock and recovery but Albert R. Kroeger's detailed account of Television's operations that weekend in the January 1964 edition of Television Magazine (No, not TV Guide) gives the viewer new appreciation of how the TV networks had to set up primitive technology and adjust under the most extreme of circumstances - for the first time! Mayo Smith's account in his book Bulletin from Dallas (1967) adds further detail and - again...appreciation. It's not fair to criticize the efforts of anchormen and commentators who had to overcome their own personal shock and distress while keeping a professional profile in front of the camera eye. Who wouldve thought this would happen in 1963? I own and have reviewed every minute of all available Television and Radio coverage and considering all I must give Television (yes, even ABC) a high grade for it's part in uniting a country suffering in bereavement. Many of the newscasters broke down after the four days after keeping their composure in front of us non-stop for 72 hours. Give them a break.
