I love the Burgess books! My mother read them to my sisters and myself as small children and we, in turn, read them to ourselves when we were old enough to start reading chapter books. I moved far away from my childhood home and the books ended up in my sisters' libraries, so my children missed out.
I was very happy to find them in print about two years ago so I can share them with my grandsons. The paperbacks have almost no editing errors. I wish the Kindle versions were as good. In this one, there are enough editing errors that I would not want my grandsons to read them in Kindle. I know the books well enough to edit my speech when the book says Fanner (many times) instead of Farmer Brown. The kids would probably be very confused if they were reading the Kindle version to themselves. Is it possible to get better editing in Kindle? These are not the first classics that I have read with many typo s in the Kindle text. Kind of frustrating...

Nice inexpesive copy, good service.
I grew up reading these books and so did my sons. Now it is time for my grandchildren. These stories are ageless and written simply enough for children and adults can enjoy them also.
Here's another animal character that we don't hear a lot about in the Thornton W. Burgess children's stories - makes his animal world more complete
classic tales
A wonderful book for children about nature and conservation as well as organic farming. The characterizations are endearing and instructive. I have been a fan of this series since I was a child and my grandchildren are becoming fans. I recommend this series highly.
We have loved Burgess' books for years. This is a bit different from the vast majority of Burgess' books in that he's explicit about his disdain for hunting. Most people don't realize that many of our greatest American conservationists were and are also hunters... Including Audubon and Leopold. Some folks will deny that fact, but it's true. The stories of Burgess have been great for my kids until Burgess expressly tried to turn animals into people in the mind of the reader. Some people they will think that it's great, but I was disappointed.
This is a wonderful book and I highly recommend it. Plus, unlike many of these Dover editions of Thornton Burgess' books, it has honest-to-god original Harrison Cady illustrations.

Harrison Cady did two sets of drawings for this title
-- Published by Little, Brown, with 6 full-page grayscale illustrations.
-- Published by Grosset & Dunlap, with 14 full-page line drawings, including line-drawing versions of all 6 original grayscale illustrations in the Little, Brown editions, plus many smaller line drawings.

This Dover edition has the 6 grayscale illustrations from the Little, Brown edition. In the Little, Brown edition, they were on plates (higher quality paper), while in this Dover edition they are on the same paper as the text. That does affect the quality of the illustrations a bit, but they still look quite good. Kudos to Dover on getting it right for this title. And at such a low price!

If you like these illustrations, I'd recommend finding a used copy of the Grosset & Dunlap edition too. Cady did those decades later, after he had grown as an artist. Even though the Grosset & Dunlap line drawings are simpler than the Little, Brown grayscale illustrations, they are more charming. On the other hand, the Little, Brown grayscale illustrations better show Cady's remarkable vision for Burgess' creatures.
